Lt. Pandit Vishnu Dutt Sharma
Acharya Jyotish from B.H.U. Banaras, a renowned Jyotish Acharya of North India and a freedom fighter.
Lt. Dr. Onkar Dutt Sharma
D.Sc., Acharya Ayurved from Jhansi University — a degree awarded to only two scholars of Ayurveda after Independence. The other was Dr. Pandit Dhulekar, who was a Member of Parliament, while Dr. Onkar Dutt Sharma’s D.Sc. was conferred at Jhansi University by Shri Morarji Desai. He was a research fellow in Ayurveda, working on a plant alkaloid effective in acute asthmatic attacks and chronic bronchitis.
He established Martand Pharmacy in Baraut, Distt. Baghpat, U.P. (then part of Distt. Meerut), holding a drug licence for biological and non-biological medicines — injections, ampoules, tablets, capsules, syrups and ointments — in both Ayurvedic and allopathic traditions. He also started a unit manufacturing glass syringes and thermometers, and after Independence published Siddh Yog Sangre, a book guiding Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) on the limits of their practice.
Through Martand Pharmaceuticals he invented the world’s first Ayurvedic injection, and wrote many books on Ayurvedic medicine that are still used by large pharmaceutical companies to make Ayurvedic products.
